Yangjiang City has a total land area of 7, 946.3 sq. km and a population of 2. 757 million, among which, agricultural population 1.61 million persons and rural labor force 1.34 million persons. Backing on mountains and facing to sea, showing a landform gently tilting from north to south, it mainly includes plain and hilly areas, characterized by subtropical monsoon climate, abundant rainfall, mild climate and ample sunshine, which is a place full of advantaged natural conditions for development of agricultural production, with annual average temperature around 23 ℃, annual average rainfall about 2, 300 mm, period of over successive 336 days when annual average temperature ≥ 10 ℃, frost-free period ≥350 days, annual average shining times 1876.2 hours and average relative humidity 81%.

　　The area for planting grain, vegetables, fruits, south China medicinal plants and flowers is known as one of the main production base in Guangdong Province. The area of regularly cultivated land is 1.56 million mu, including 1,158 , 000 mu of paddy field area and 3.91 million mu of cultivation area on low hillside with a slope less than 25 degrees, with fertile land, rich topsoil, and neutral-to-weak-acid soil. The cultivated area reaches 3.5 million mu mainly for the plantation of agricultural products like rice, sweet potatoes, corn, vegetables, peanuts, soybeans, silkworm and south China medicinal plants. Five major characteristic pillar industries like fruit, south China herb plants, vegetables, sericulture and flowers have been formed. The Mashui Oranges and fructus amomi produced in Yangchun, litchi variety Shuangjianyu Hebao and Alpinia oxyplylla variety Daba planted in Yangdong, Xitou colorful sweet potato produced inYangxi, Shangyang watermelon, and other products have got well-known far and near, among which, Mashui Orange has been awarded by China Fruit Marketing Association a title of ‘China’s Well-known Fruit’, and litchi variety Shuangjianyu Hebao has been selected via public appraisal as ‘Top 10 Chinese Litchi Varieties’. Moreover, Yangjiang has respectively gained advantageous business cards of agriculture like ‘China’s Hometown of Litchi Variety Shuangjianyu Hebao’, ‘China’s Hometown of Mashui Oranges’, ‘China’s Hometown of Silkworms’, ‘China’s Hometwon of Fructus Amomi’, ‘China’s Hometown of Amomum Amarum’ and ‘China’s Hometown of Piglets’, and thanks to which, a number of brand-name products at the provincial level have been created, i.e. Yangfan Fermented Soya Beans, Zhenguo Brand Sour-Sweet Amomum Amarum, Chunnong Brand Mashui Oranges, Green Leaf Brand Candied Wampee, Yangling Brand Dehydrated Fructus Amomi and etc. 16 items of Pollution-free Agricultural Products produced in this city have been certified by national authorized organs, including 11 items of green food and 9 items of organic products. The fruits, vegetables, south China herb plants and other characteristic agricultural products produced have been sold well both at home and abroad, and have successfully entered into markets in United States, Canada, European Union, Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and other countries or regions with an annual export volume of more than 50, 000 tons.

　　In 2010 in the whole city, cultivation area for rice reached 1, 641, 300 mu with a total output of 553, 600 tons, cultivation area for fruits 1, 198, 100 mu with a total output of 487, 900 tons; cultivation area for vegetables 873, 700 mu with a total output of 892, 300 tons; cultivation area for flowers 55, 500mu and cultivation area for silkworm 81, 100 mu.

　　Fruit products in the whole city mainly include four major varieties like litchi, longan, oranges, banana(big) and other sub-tropical fruits such as watermelon, wampee, shanhua plum, guava, jack fruit, green jujube, strawberry, mango, greengage, Chinese yellow olive and etc. In 2010, cultivation area for litchi reached 471, 300mu with a total output of 79, 600 tons, cultivation area for longan 224, 400 mu with a total output of 57, 500 tons, cultivation area for oranges 332,100 mu with a total output of 265, 400 tons, and cultivation area for banana (big) 49, 000 mu with a total output of 45, 000 tons. The cultivation area and output of the four major fruit varieties accounted for over 90% of the total in Yangjiang.

　　Yangjiang City is a traditional plantation area of south China herb plants and is rich in south China herb plant varieties resources that are widely distributed. According to survey and statistics, the existing south China herb plant varieties in the city total approximately 300, and over 30 varieties of south China herb plants are currently planted, which mainly include villosum, Amomum amarum, sand ginger, patchouli, aniseed, Chinese yam, Herba Andrographitis, Snowbellleaf tickclover Herb, chastetree fruit, cinnamon, Polygonum multiflorum, pepper, sandalwood and etc. In 2010, the cultivation area for south China herb plants reached 189, 600 mu and a total output value of RMB 546 million Yuan.

Nearly 20 south China medicinal plants processing enterprises of a certain size produce products, mainly including Houjiling Capsules, Wushen Qiling Pills, Fructus Amomi Wine, Beaver Wine, Fructus Amomi Sugar, Fructus Amomi Dried Fruit, Amomum Amarum Dried Fruit, Ganbaoqing Tablet, Compound Creat Tablets, Isatis Root, Zhuwei Powder and etc.

　　The amount of pigs on hand is 1, 454, 800, including 252, 600 heads of breeding sows, 1, 887, 100 heads of flesh pig; the amount of poultry is 7, 360, 700, and the amount of marketable fattened poultry is 21, 913, 700; the amount of cows on hand is 129, 800; the amount of sheep on hand is 10,400 the amount of marketable fattened sheep is 13, 600; The total amount of meat production is 181, 100 tons.

　　 10 characteristic cultivation bases have been formed: high-quality litchi and longan base (600, 000 mu), Mashui orange base (150, 000 mu), banana base (40, 000 mu), all-year-round vegetable base (100, 000 mu), base of pepper for northern China markets ( 50, 000 mu), suburb-type vegetable base (50, 000 mu), watermelon base (60, 000 mu), flower base (40, 000 mu), south China herb plant base (100, 000 mu), silkworm base (80, 000 mu). 　　In recent years, capitals have been invested in strengthening a large number of projects like farmland water conservancy construction, transformation of low-yielding fields, comprehensive agricultural development and etc. At present, projects as follows have been implemented: reconstruction of more than 300, 000 mu of low-/medium-yielding farmland, construction of 300, 000 mu standard farmland, construction of 2 large-sized reservoirs, 18 medium-sized reservoirs, 192 small-sized reservoirs, 3, 385 water diversion projects, 126 electric irrigation and water pumping projects, projects of water storage, water transmission and water pumping for farmland irrigation of 1.33 million mu, construction of 2 large-sized water gates, 19 medium-sized gates, 337 small-sized gates, 143 drainage stations, treatment of flood control area of 99, 700mu, constructions of 176 river or sea embankment projects with a total bank length of 886m, construction of 493 small-sized hydropower stations with a total installed capacity of 268, 000 kilowatts and annual output of electric power 660 million kwh. In addition, construction of a large number of projects like human & livestock drinking water project, soil and water conservation project, and water conservancy tourism project. These works have effectively improved the irrigation of farmland as well as conditions of traffic and soil capacity, and thus increased the agricultural production capacity.

　　Importance has been attached to cultivation of leading agricultural enterprises and rural specialized cooperative economic organizations in order to develop and strengthen it so as to form a scale production.
