          Forestry Resources

With a mild climate and abundant rainfall, Yangjiang City is rich in forest resources, especially in recent years, its forest resources continue to expand, the quality of the forest constantly improve, green ecological barriers has basically shaped. At present, there currently are 650, 100 mu of forestry land with a forest cover rate of 55.3% and a growing stock volume of 19, 113, 000 cubic meters. The per capita forest area average is 2.18 mu based on its population of 2. 75 million which equals to 10 times that of Dongguan City. Forest biomass in the city reaches 20, 233, 000 tons, the forest vegetation can assimilate 3,261, 000 tons of carbon dioxide every year and produce 23, 714, 000 tons of oxygen, and water conservation can provide 647,283,000 cubic meters and reduce soil erosion up to 1.83 million tons. The comprehensive forest ecological benefit is valued at RMB 24.53 billion, which provide a sound ecological environment for the sustainable socio-economic development.

            I. Rich in forest land resources suitable for planting various species.

There are 6, 501, 000 mu of forest lands, accounting for 57% of the total land area of 11.42 million mu, including 2.01 million mu of ecological forest land that accounts for 31% of the land for forestry, 4. 491 million mu of commercial forest land that accounts for 69% of the forestry land. According to the ownership of land, the total forest land area consists of 654, 700 mu belonging to state-owned forest farms and 5, 846, 300 mu belonging to rural collective units. According to the categories of land, the forestry land consists of: 610, 7300 mu of forest land, 34, 000 mu of sparsely forested woodland, 190, 100 mu of shrub land, 85, 800 mu of young forestation land, 84, 100mu of other forest land. According to the species of trees, commercial forest consists of: 1, 416, 700 mu of pine tree, 915, 300 mu of eucalypt tree and acacia confusa, 558, 700 mu of cedar, 662, 600 mu of conifer and broadleaf forest, 639, 200 mu of other trees. According to the age structure, the land area of nearly-mature aged forest accounts for about 29% and mature forest only about 25.5%. The distribution of forest resources are: the forest resources in Yangchun accounts for 58.8%, while Yangdong 18.9%, Yangxi 13.9% and others 8.4% respectively.

II.The construction of commercial forest is increasingly presenting base-characteristics, and the area of fast-growing & high-yielding forest has continuously got enlarged.

In recent years, the government has been making great efforts to develop commercial forest bases, and so far as a result, bases have been established as follows: short-rotation base with a land area of 600, 000 mu for fast-growing and high-yielding forests mainly comprising eucalyptus and acacia, base with a land area of 1, 510, 000 mu for pine tree and 520, 000 mu for cedar. As the level of forestry production base and intensive operation management have risen, the average annual output value of per mu forest land has also risen from RMB 20 Yuan in 1992 to the current RMB 150~200 Yuan, and thus, the forestry is playing an increasingly obvious role in promoting the development of the rural economy. According to the demand in markets in the future, the construction of bases for fast-growing & high-yielding forest, industrial raw materials forest and economic forest will be accelerated, the selection and cultivation of excellent native tree species will be strengthened, the planting of valuable, rare tree species will be expanded, large-diameter timber resources will be cultivated, the forest food, woody grain & edible-oil trees and bio-energy trees will be actively developed. By 2012, bases with a land area of 2.5 million mu for fast-growing & high-yielding forest mainly consisting of eucalyptus, acacia and conifer will be developed; bases with a land area of 1 million mu for ecological forests or economic forest consisting of fruit trees, tea tree and herbs that characterize our city will be developed, and meanwhile, the existing 700, 000mu of economic forest will be transformed and excellent species that are famous, special and superior will be selected for plantation.

III.Industrialization of forestry industry has been steadily advanced, and the wood deep-processing industry has developed rapidly

From 1988 to 2010, the total output of wood reached 1, 810, 000 cubic meters. At present, the above-scale wood processing enterprises have totaled 280 with a total sale of RMB 786 million Yuan in 2010, including 4 plants engaging in high and/or medium density fiberboard and 171 plants engaging in furniture. The secondary industry has been preliminarily formed that covers complete types of processing enterprises mainly consisting of wood-based panel plant and furniture plants as leading enterprises. The share accounted for wood-based panel enterprises is getting increasingly large, and a total over 260, 000 cubic meters of high and medium density fiberboard was produced last year with an output value of RMB 392 million Yuan, of which, the output of medium density fiberboard of Lu Yuan Wood-based Panel Co., Ltd. in 2009 reached 132, 000 cubic meters, with an annual production value of RMB 182 million Yuan, whose investment of RMB 250 million Yuan in the construction of a high-density fiberboard production line started trial production in last September. Up to now, its production output has reached 50, 000 cubic meters, and the technology of wood-based panel production line has reached the international advanced level, the utilization rate of timber/wood has reached 99% or above, who has played a leading role in optimizing the industrial structure of its forestry industry. In the future, great efforts will be made to develop wood-based panel industry, woody flowers, bamboo processing, fruit processing industry as well as the furniture industry to form a forest products industrial system with rational layout, appropriate scale, advanced technologies, high-quality products and good economic benefits. In addition, the development of domestication and breeding of wild animals will also be actively expanded, and domesticating and breeding bases will be established for the purpose to rationally, properly develop and utilize the wildlife resources.

IV.Broad prospects for the development of the tertiary industry of forestry, tourism have gradually become a leading industry.

Various types of nature reserves and forest parks set up have totaled 30 with a total land area of 1, 624, 500 mu, accounting for 14.2% of the land area. Being upgraded to a provincial-level nature reserve in 2004, Mt. Ehuangzhang Nature Reserve in Yangchun City is currently under the procedure for a national nature reserve. At present, the provincial-level Huatan Forest Park is under a negotiation for the contract of a project called World Peace Expo Guangdong Yiyang Garden. The government plans to gradually foster the eco-tourism so that it can become a new economic growth point of forestry. Under the precondition that ecological environment is properly protected, we will focus on supporting Mt. Ehuangzhang Nature Reserve, Provincial-level Huatan Forest Park, and Jinshan Forest Park for a purpose to develop characteristic tourism of active coastal forest recreation, ecological orchard park and valuable tree species. By 2015, a valuable tree species tourism park covering a land area of 500 mu will respectively be set up in Jiangcheng District, Yangchun City, Yangdong County and Yangxi County and gradually expanded into a tourism plant park with continuous area and perfect ecological environment covering a land area over 1, 000 mu in order to promote the development of the forest service industry, meet the people's demand for leisure travel, and enrich the connotation of ‘Cultural Forestry’.
